Chapter Eleven

“Bridget?” Eleanor called from the door of the hill fort where our Ghostly Acclimatisation meetings were held. “We’re starting.”

The GBs let me go just in time to go to my GA meeting. I looked out over the harbour. The view usually filled me with a sense of peace. I used to think it was because everyone below seemed so tiny and it reminded me how insignificant we all really were in the cosmic scheme of things. Like, if we were all so small, how big could our problems really be? But tonight I’d realised it was because I’d had someone to share those problems with. Tonight I felt very much alone with Everest sized problems. With a longing look at a boat sailing out to sea I turned and crossed the grass to Eleanor.

“I’m so sorry to hear about Sabrina. I’m sure she’ll be out and back to herself in no time.” Eleanor’s tone belied her words.

“She will.” Because, honestly, there was no other choice.

“I thought you might need a little distraction tonight so instead of learning new things, I cobbled together a bit of a game. Hopefully, it will cheer you up and keep your mind occupied for a while. I think we could all do with a bit of a time out.”

“Thanks, Eleanor, that’s really kind of you.” I forced a wide smile because I was not in the mood for games. And the first person who mentioned role-play was going to take a chair to the face.

I followed Eleanor inside and, out of habit, made for the tea and biscuit station usually situated at the back of the room. But there were no tea or biscuits.

“Games and no tea? Can this day get any worse?”

“What’s going on?” Warren, the goth teenager with a load of metal in his face, circled me like a shark.

“What do you mean?”

He swirled his finger in my direction. “No death shroud. You must be doing something wrong. Where’s your partner in crime?”

“She’s otherwise engaged this evening.”

“Everyone?” Eleanor clapped twice to call the group’s attention to her. “Tonight, I thought we’d have some fun.” Everyone cheered.

Warren looked at me and mouthed, “Is this your fault?”

I shrugged back.

“Has anyone been orienteering?” Eleanor asked.

“We did it as a team building exercise at my old job,” Allison, or possible Debbie, answered. I still couldn’t tell them apart.

“For those of you who don’t know what it is, I have hidden pieces of paper all around Scarborough and you have to collect the letters from them all and make a word or phrase. We’re going to partner up so—” Eleanor gestured around the room that everyone should find a partner.

I was fully expecting to be left to do it alone which was fine but Warren shuffled closer to me.

“What are you standing by me for?”

“Partners?” Warren asked.

“Me? Why? I thought you’d be off with someone who loves this stuff so they can do all the work and you can take all the credit.”

“Usually, but none of these people will work with you so I thought I’d do you a favour.
